Hatching in Patent Drawings is an essential method to show features of inventions in technical illustrations, providing clarity and dimension to patent documentation. 1. Hatching:

1.1 Definition:It is the method for displaying cross-sections of the product, materials, and textures in a patent drawing. Generally, hatching is represented by the oblique parallel lines.

1.2 Purpose:The main purpose of hatching is to display cross-sections, materials, and textures as required in the patent drawings. It can also be used in graphs (e.g., bar graphs) to distinguish various features of the drawings. It also helps to distinguish the legends in the graphs.

2. Use of Hatching in Patent Drawings

Hatching is used in utility patent drawings as well as design patent drawings.

2.1 Utility Patent Drawings: In utility patent drawings, hatching is used to show the cross-section of the object. This allows the person skilled in the art to easily understand where the imaginary cutting plane has sliced through the material. Hatching provides a clear indication of the material of the object. If the cross-sectional view is not shown with the correct hatching, the examiner may misinterpret the drawing and issue a rejection.

Examples

FIG. 1 shows the complete object and section line 2-2 represents that where the part is being cut to show the sectional view and internal structure of the object. FIG. 2 is an incorrect representation of the section view. It creates confusion for the examiner and the examiner may reject the drawings. On the other hand, FIG. 4 is a correct representation of the section view of FIG. 3. The use of hatching clearly indicates that it is a section view of the object, and material has been removed to reveal the inner details.

FIG. 5 shows color representation of the graph. It is not a good practice for patent drawings. As per the USPTO, the black & white line drawings are preferred. For such drawings, different hatching patterns should be used to indicate different colors. If possible, a legend can be included to easily identify the hatching patterns, as shown in FIG. 6. 2.2 Design Patent Drawings: The Design patent protects the aesthetic appearance of a product. In design patent drawings, hatching plays an important role for indicating the surface textures, materials (e.g. cloth, fabric, Velcro), and surfaces. Some of the examples are shown below:

In FIG. 9, the pattern represents fabric material and in FIG. 10 the parallel line shading shows flat surfaces of the product.

3. Various Hatch pattern acceptable by USPTO

There are several types of hatching patterns used in patent drawings to signify various materials. According to the USPTO, multiple hatching types are acceptable for various materials, such as foam, leather, plastic, metal, wood, concrete, cork, etc. Some examples are shown below, and these are acceptable by the USPTO.
